Refurbished iPhone SIM and eSIM: check the regional model
Confirm the exact regional model, SIM arrangement and carrier support before choosing a refurbished iPhone.

Updated 22 October 2026 · Reloopo Guides
Confirm the exact regional model and your carrier before buying a refurbished iPhone for a physical SIM or eSIM. “Unlocked” describes a carrier restriction; it does not add a SIM tray, enable unsupported eSIM hardware or guarantee every carrier service.
Three configurations to recognise
A nano-SIM is a removable physical card. An eSIM is activated digitally on a compatible device. Dual nano-SIM means two physical cards; “Dual SIM” on its own does not tell you which arrangement a phone uses. Ask about the hardware and activation method separately.
About the cover: AI-generated explanatory illustration. Configuration depends on the exact model and region; this is not a screenshot or a photograph of an inspected device.
Examples for the iPhone 13, 14 and 15 families
| Regional example | What to check |
|---|---|
| US-market iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 families | These versions are eSIM-only, without a physical SIM tray. Confirm carrier eSIM activation before purchase. |
| Many other international versions | A physical nano-SIM plus eSIM may be supported. Verify the exact model rather than relying on “international version”. |
| Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao variants | Certain models use two physical nano-SIMs. Apple lists iPhone 13, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, and the iPhone 14 and 15 families; do not apply that rule to every mini or SE. |
| Hong Kong or Macao iPhone 13 mini | Apple directs this model to its eSIM Dual SIM guidance. It is an exception to a blanket “Hong Kong means two physical SIMs” rule. |
These examples are a starting point, not a promise about available Reloopo stock. The country a parcel ships from is not necessarily the region the hardware was made for. Do not infer the SIM arrangement from a colour, cosmetic grade or warehouse photograph.
A four-step compatibility check
- Identify the device. Ask for the exact model name and regional A-number where available. Compare them with Apple’s model-identification guidance.
- Confirm the SIM arrangement. Specify one physical SIM, two physical SIMs, eSIM, or a particular combination. Do not settle for “Dual SIM” if the distinction matters.
- Ask your carrier. Give the carrier the model and your intended plan. Check activation, calls, mobile data and any feature you rely on, such as Wi-Fi Calling. Imported hardware and prepaid plans can have different requirements.
- Confirm before payment. Keep the seller’s written confirmation with your order. If compatibility is unresolved, ask before choosing a variant.
A message you can send before ordering
“I want to buy [exact model and storage] for use in [country] with [carrier and plan]. I need [physical nano-SIM / two physical SIMs / eSIM]. Please confirm the regional model, the supported SIM arrangement and whether the device is carrier-unlocked.”
If the carrier needs an IMEI for a compatibility check, use its official private checker or support channel. Do not post an IMEI, serial number or an eSIM activation QR code in a public review or blog comment.
If you travel or use two numbers
Check your home plan and the travel plan separately. An eSIM-capable device still needs a compatible provider and activation route. Some travel plans provide data only, so confirm whether you need a local phone number, SMS or voice calls. Also consider which line handles mobile data and what your home carrier charges for roaming.
A tray with two cards does not by itself guarantee two simultaneous data connections. Check the capabilities and limitations of the exact device in Apple’s Dual SIM instructions. Changing the software region does not turn a two-physical-SIM model into an eSIM model.
Questions before you buy
Does “unlocked” mean every carrier will work?
No. It removes a carrier lock, but hardware bands, carrier approvals, plan support and activation requirements still matter.
Does shipping from Hong Kong mean a Hong Kong model?
No. Shipping origin and device region are different details. Ask for the exact regional model.
Can I choose a colour and assume its SIM type?
No. Confirm the SIM configuration for the option being supplied, especially when physical SIM support is essential.
