How to keep your refurbished iPhone or iPad in use for longer
Choose hardware that fits your needs, look after it and plan its next use. A practical approach to buying refurbished.

Updated 22 October 2026 · Reloopo Guides
A refurbished device can give existing hardware another useful life. The practical starting point is choosing something you can keep using: enough storage, suitable software and a condition you are comfortable with. Replacing a device quickly because it does not meet your needs works against that aim.
First, consider the device you already have
If your current phone or tablet still meets your needs, keeping it may be the most useful next step. Check whether freeing storage, updating software or obtaining an appropriate repair would resolve the problem. Buying refurbished makes sense when you need another device; it is not a reason to replace working hardware sooner.
Buy for the tasks that matter
List the apps you rely on, the storage you use and the features you need. Check software compatibility before choosing an older model. A smaller or older device can suit light use, while study, creative work or demanding apps may need different hardware. Compare the current iPhone and iPad collections rather than assuming the newest-looking device is the best fit.
Separate appearance from usefulness
Visible cosmetic wear does not automatically make a device unsuitable. At Reloopo, Acceptable, Good and Excellent describe different levels of wear, with standard minimum battery-health guarantees of 80%, 90% and 95% respectively where stated on the product page. Product-specific battery disclosures apply; the current iPhone 8 instead specifies a new third-party replacement battery. All grades are checked for functionality. Choose a grade you will be comfortable keeping, then read the product’s specific details.
Look after the next chapter
Use a suitable case or screen protector if that helps prevent accidental damage. Follow the manufacturer’s care and charging guidance, keep software updated where supported and back up important data. Keep refurbished devices away from water: an original water-resistance rating does not guarantee the same protection after prior use or refurbishment.
If a fault appears, ask about support before deciding to replace the device. Reloopo’s 12-month warranty has defined coverage and exclusions; checking those terms can help you decide the next step.
Plan what happens afterwards
When a device no longer suits you, consider a suitable next user or a recognised electronics recycling service. Back up your data, sign out of your accounts and erase the device using the manufacturer’s instructions before passing it on.
Keeping products in use for longer can reduce the need for replacement hardware. The environmental outcome depends on the device, refurbishment, transport and what the purchase replaces. We do not assign an unverified carbon-saving figure to an individual Reloopo order.
Make a care plan you can actually follow
- Back up important photos and documents before repairs or major changes.
- Keep enough free storage for your essential apps and updates.
- Use compatible charging accessories and follow the manufacturer’s temperature guidance.
- Check a developing fault with support before it becomes a reason to replace the whole device.
- When passing it on, follow Apple’s account sign-out and erase instructions rather than only deleting photos.
Choose your next device around its intended job: compare iPhone generations or plan an iPad for study and work. A purchase that meets your needs is easier to keep in use.
